Biography

Kate Craske was born at Stanstead, Suffolk in 1860. At that time Stanstead was in the registration district of Sudbury. She is believed to have been deaf and dumb from birth.

Parents were Thomas Craske, born 1830 at Shimpling, Suffolk, and Georgianna Aust, born 1832 at Stanstead, Suffolk, who married at Sudbury in 1854.

Paternal grandparents were George Craske, born about 1792 at Semer, Suffolk, and Susan Mortlock, born about 1804 at Shimpling, Suffolk, who married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1821

At the time of the 1871 UK Census she was attending a school for deaf and dumb children in Margate, Kent, and according to the 1891 UK Census, she was deaf and dumb from childhood.
