Charles Underwood was born at Potterne, Wiltshire and his birth was registered at Devizes (which covers Potterne) in 1850 or 1851.

His parents were George Underwood and Eliza Pearce who married at Potterne in 1841, and they named him after a brother of the same name who died.

At the 1851 UK Census he was listed living at Potterne with his parents and listed as a child under 1.
