Joshua William Underwood, 18661944 (aged 77 years)

Name
Joshua William Underwood
Occupation

(Emma Underwood [nee Birmingham) is the wife of William G Underwood who is the son of George Wiilliam Underwood and Maria Lane)

Occupation

This appears to be the family, but Joshua William Underwood appears to have changed his name to Johnathan and is no longer saying he was born in Bristol! His wife and family are there and his first initial is the same. Even his occupation is the same, drapers porter (1891 census) drapery warehouseman (1901 census) and wholesale drapery salesman (1911 census). Maybe he was trying to avoid creditors, but this is only subjection! The changes in the birth place of Matilda, from Dorchester to Cerne Abbas, can be explained by Cerne Abbas being on the outskirts of Dorchester. The changes in the birth place of William from Newington, London to Kennington Park, London is explained by the fact that both Newington and Kennington Park both became part of the same registration district in 1901.

Note

Biography

Joshua William Underwood was born at Bedminster, Bristol, on 25 Nov 1866.

His parents were William George Underwood who was born in Gloucester Workhouse in 1841, and Emma Birmingham, who was born in Selworthy, Somerset in 1830, who married at Bristol, Gloucestershire in 1862.

His paternal grand-parents were George William Underwood who was born at Atworth, Wiltshire in 1819, and Maria Lane, who was born at Wiltshire in 1823, who married at Gloucester in 1840.

His maternal grand-parents were William Birmingham and Jane Birmingham.

Joshua William Underwood married Matilda Bridle who was born at Dorchester in 1866, and they married at at St Giles, London in 1894 and they had at least two children

  1. Joseph Underwood born London in 1896
  2. William George Underwood born London in 1898.

At the time of the 1911 UK Census, unless the person taking the census made a mistake (which is always a possibility) Joshua is listed as Johnathan. If he did change his name it seems to have only been temporary as he is listed in his correct name by the time of the 1939 national register. Perhaps he owed money, or there was some other reason why he wanted to change his name in 1911.

At some time between 1911 and 1939 Joshua and his wife moved to Eastborne in Sussex as they are listed there in 1939 and at the death of each of them. Joshua William Underwood died there in 1944 aged 77 years, and his wife Matilda Underwood died there in 1950 aged 84.

Possible Confusions

The 1911 census appear to be the family, but Joshua appears to have changed his name from Joshua to Johnathan and his location of birth from Bristol to Bermondsey! Even the occupation is similar drapers porter (1891 census) drapery warehouseman (1901 census) and wholesale drapery salesman (1911 census).
