Cyril Oliver Underwood 1896–1983

Cyril Oliver Underwood was born at Shardlow, Derbyshire on 16 November 1896.

May also have been called ''Jack'' or ''John'' (see future research note below).

The birth was not registered until the first quarter of 1897, and he was christened on 28 February 1897 at the parish church at Chellaston, Derbyshire, England.

His parents were Octavious Underwood, born at Dursley, Gloucestershire, in 1857, and Agnes Meakin, born at Chellaston, Derbyshire, in 1885 who married in 1895.

His paternal grandparents were George William Underwood, born at Atworth, Wiltshire in 1819, and Maria Lane, born in 1823.

He married Gladys Ingham at Derby in 1919, and they had at least one son.

At the time of the 1911 UK Census he was living with his Mother and elder siblings at 16 Albion Street, Derby. His father is listed elsewhere, working away at a mine in Nottingham.

After his mother's death in 1912 he continued living at the same address being looked after by his older brother Octavious George Underwood who called himself George and who subsequently died in the first world war.

Cyril Oliver Underwood disliked his name and called himself 'Jack' or 'John', and he used that as his middle name at his subsequent marriage. Similarly, because he felt his real father had abandoned him he listed his brother 'George' as his father.

FUTURE RESEARCH

According to Cyril Oliver Underwood's Grandson, Christopher Underwood, as reported to Cyril Oliver Underwood's Grand Nephew Richard A Underwood in 2019 Cyril Oliver Underwood was known as John (or Jack) Underwood for the following reasons:

After his mother's death in 1912 Cyril Oliver Underwood continued living at the same address being looked after by his older brother Octavious George Underwood who called himself George and who subsequently died in the first world war[6].

Cyril Oliver Underwood disliked his name and called himself 'Jack' or 'John', and he used that as his middle name at his subsequent marriage. Similarly, because he felt his real father had abandoned him he listed his brother 'George' as his father.

There must be some doubt. If he disliked the name 'Cyril' so much why would he call his son 'Cyril' and why would he again be calling himself Cyril Oliver and not Cyril Jack at the time of the 1939 Register?

Although his grandson is certain the information is correct, it may still be possible that the Cyril John Underwood (with a father named George) who married Gladys Ingham in 1919 is not the same person as Cyril Oliver Underwood (with a father named Octavious).

A paper trail, army records, 1921 and 1931 census records, etc., may resolve this, so when there is incontrovertible proof one way or another this note should be removed.
