Occupation | (George William Underwood was born at Atworth, Wiltshire in 1819) |
Note | George William Underwood 1819–1890George William Underwood was baptised at Atworth, Wiltshire on 30 May 1819 under just the first name of George Underwood. His parents were John Underwood born in 1794 and Ann Underwood (nee Stone) who married at Atworth in 1813 (at that time Atworth was part of the parish of Bradford on Avon). As he was baptised with the single name of George, it is possible that he took on the second name of William in memory of his younger brother who was born in 1813. There is no proof of this as yet as the date of death of his younger brother is unknown. George William Underwood appears to have lived all his adult life in the South West of England, mostly in Dursley, Gloucestershire, and usually just used his first name of George. He married three times He married Maria Lane in Gloucester in 1840 and they had four children Children with Maria Lane
Maria Lane died in 1850, and a year later in 1851 he married Matilda Curtis in Dursley Parish Church on 9 March 1851. The Bans of Marriage describe them both as residents of the parish. The Parish Marriage Register give Matilda Curtis' father as William Curtis, and the witnesses in the Register are William Curtis and Sarah Curtis. It is probable that Sarah Curtis was the step mother of Matilda Curtis, as subsequent census returns estimate Matilda Curtis date of birth as 1832 whilst her 'mother's' age is estimated as 1821 which is only 11 years earlier. Children with Matilda Curtis
Matilda Curtis died aged 41 at Dursley in 1873, and in 1881 he married Sarah Curtis, the step-mother of his second wife. They had no children. At the time of the 1841 census he was working as an agricultural labourer and he and his first wife were living with two elderly widows. They had four children together but two of those children died the same year in which they were born, John James Underwood in 1849 and Fanny Underwood in 1850. Maria Lane herself died in the Gloucester Workhouse in 1850. The Dursley Census of 1851 shows him living with his new wife, together with the two remaining children from his first marriage, William George Underwood born in 1841, and Ann Maria Underwood born in 1844. His occupation is given as a train driver. Subsequent census records in 1861, 1871, and 1881 show him remaining in the same location, and in the same job as a train driver. Some children were never shown on the census returns as they were born and died between a census. By the time of the 1881 Census, his his mother in law and father in law were living with him and his surviving children at Dursley. His father in law die in 1881 and George William Underwood then married for a third time to his mother in law, Sara Curtis, the step-mother of his late wife who was the same age as he was. He died at Dursley, Gloucestershire in 1890. He is NOT the GEORGE Underwood born at POTTERNE, Wiltshire, whose parents JOHN and ANN Underwood were married at POTTERNE in 1810. The two George Underwood's are listed at different places in both the 1841 and the 1851 census. At the 1841 UK Census George Underwood from ATWORTH is listed living with his wife. At the 1861 UK Census George Underwood from ATWORTH is listed with his wife and children. The George Underwood from POTTERNE is still listed with his parents. POSSIBLE CONFUSIONS *Atford, Wiltshire and Atworth, Wiltshire are the same place! For clarity and continuity reasons, the word Atworth is prefered. The following information is taken from the home page of the Atworth Village Website http://www.atworth.org.uk/ The famous mapmaker and cartographer John Speed (1552 - 1629) shows Atworth on his maps of Wiltshire, but it is named as "Atford". Later, in 1773, the mapmakers Andrews and Dury, published a map of Wiltshire in which Atworth appeared as both "Atford" and as "Attworth". The "At" component of the name has been associated with the word "oat", which may imply a role in the service of grain markets of the time. When or where there may have been a ford in the village seems not be known at present. By the time the Ordnance Survey produced its first maps in the early 19th century, the village was almost exclusively referred to as "Atworth". George William Underwood 1819–1890 |
