Biography

George Thomas Underwood was born in Gloucester in 1852.

His parents were George William Underwood born at Atworth, Wiltshire in 1819, and Matilda Curtis born at Bath, Somerset, in 1834, who married at Dursley in 1851 after the death of George William Underwood's first wife in 1850.

His paternal grandparents were John Underwood born about 1794 and Ann Stone who married at Atworth in 1813 (at that time Atworth was part of the parish of Bradford on Avon).

George married Mary Bourne at St Pancras, London in 1877 and they had at least one child,

  1. George Cyril Matthew Underwood, born St Pancras in 1889.

A couple of years earlier, in 1875, his brother John Underwood had married his future sister in law, Annie Bourne.

George Thomas Underwood appears on the 1861 Census as a nine year old scholar.

On the 1871 Census he is listed as a nineteen year old gardener whilst still living with his parents.

After his marriage in 1877 he is listed on the 1881 census with his wife and nephew.

On the 1891 census he is listed with his wife, son, nephew, and widowed father in law.

On the 1901 and 1911 census he is listed with his wife, son, and nephew.

London Florists At the time of the 1891 UK Census three brothers who were all in their thirties were working as florists in London. George Thomas Underwood and Orlando Underwood were living next door to one another in St Pancras High Street, and John Henry Underwood was living in Holloway Road, Islington.

He died at Pancras, Camden, London, in 1925.
