1851 UK Census Ann Street, St Heliers, Jersey, Channel Islands. HO107/2527/336

  • Richard Cox, Head, Male, 28, Coachman, b. England
  • Grace Cox, Wife, Female, 25, b. England
  • Emma Cox, Daughter, Daughter, Unmarried, Female, 8, b. England
  • Lavinia Cox, Female, 9, b. Channel Islands

On the above census transcript, the bottom line was originally transcribed as Richard Cox, Son, Female, 9, b. Channel Islands Richard wasn't born then as he was only 8 years old at the time of the next census in 1861. Either, this was a different Richard who died (and female is incorrect) or, more likely, this is 9 year old Lavinia Cox (and Richard' is incorrect) I have not seen the original Census record so can't tell which error is on the transcript.

FUTURE RESEARCH

I have changed the above 1851 Census because the original transcription said: Richard Cox, Son, Female, 9, b. Channel Islands

This cannot be correct a Son cannot be a female. Also, Richard himself was not born at that time as he is described as only 8 years old at the next census 10 years later.

There is obviously a transcript error:

Either

  1. This was a different Richard who died (and female is incorrect)
  2. or, more likely, this is 9 year old Lavinia Cox (and Richard' is incorrect)

I have not yet seen an image of the original Census record.
